Make frozen yoghurt yourself: 3 recipes

Frozen yogurt is becoming more and more popular. More and more shops are opening in our inner cities where the sour ice cream can be bought. The refreshing sweet comes from America and is the healthier alternative to Central European ice cream.

Frozen yogurt: just frozen yogurt?

In Frozen yogurt is ice cream, which is composed mainly of yogurt, but also contains a large amount of sugar. This is why frozen yoghurt is not really healthy, but it contains significantly less fat than cream ice cream.

If you make frozen yoghurt yourself, you are free to replace the large amount of sugar with alternatives, for example stevia or other sweeteners. Please do not use honey, syrup or syrup, as this will not reduce the calorie content. Either “real” sugar or none at all! After all, frozen yoghurt is actually a completely unnecessary sweet.

It’s all about the topping!

If you order a frozen yogurt in town, you can usually choose from different toppings. It is up to you how healthy or unhealthy your ice cream will be. Sugar sprinkles, chocolate or sauces as well as brittle or crispy flakes are not a healthy choice.

Choose fruit or nuts. In addition, always choose the smallest possible portion of frozen yoghurt, because even with fruit as a topping and the mostly lower fat content, the ice cream specialty is still “sugar stuff”, which is only ok occasionally and in small quantities. It is healthier to make the frozen yogurt yourself. Try the following recipes:

Frozen yogurt on a stick

This variant is particularly simple and looks great. You will need these special ice cream molds for popsicles and the following ingredients:

  • Low-fat yoghurt
  • Fresh fruit, e.g. berries
  • Sweetener of your choice
  • Topping made from oatmeal or nuts

Stir the low-fat yogurt until creamy and sweeten it to your personal taste. Cut the fruit small enough to fit in the ice cream molds. Then mix the yogurt and fruit and pour the mixture into the molds. Make sure that there are no air bubbles in the small ice cream molds that could cause the ice to break off later. Sprinkle the surface with cereal flakes or nuts, insert the stem, and let the ice cream freeze.

The 2 ingredients of the yogurt lemon face mask

Lemon yogurt ice cream

If you don’t have an ice machine but still want creamy ice cream, after about 2 hours of freezing time, scrape the ice up and stir until creamy before freezing it again for at least 4 hours. If you forget that, it doesn’t matter, the wonderfully fresh taste remains! For this extremely refreshing recipe you will need:

  • 800g yogurt, low in fat
  • 300g sugar (or alternatives)
  • 4 lemons (organic!)

Squeeze the lemons and rub off the peel of 1-2 lemons. Therefore, please use lemons from certified organic cultivation.

Then stir all the ingredients into a smooth cream and pour them into either the ice cream maker or an ice bucket. If you don’t have an ice cream machine, the ice cream will be creamier if you use cream yogurt or Greek yogurt. However, it is then a rather greasy affair, whose advantage over cream ice cream melts away …

Make frozen yoghurt yourself

Frozen yogurt from the ice cube maker

If you want to serve frozen yoghurt as a decorative dessert, you can also prepare the ice cream in the ice cube maker and then serve it nicely decorated as delicious ice cubes for dessert. The frozen yoghurt cubes also go well with fruit salads or as a floating decoration in cold bowls. For “strawberry yoghurt cubes” you need:

  • 300g yogurt
  • 300g strawberries
  • Sweetener of your choice
  • Lemon balm leaves

The lemon balm leaves add that “certain something” to the dessert. You can also omit them, then your frozen yoghurt will still taste good.

Clean the strawberries and put them in a blender with the yoghurt and sweetener or puree everything with the hand blender to a creamy mass.

Chop the lemon balm leaves and fold them into the rest of the ingredients. Pour the mixture into the ice cube maker and let the ice cream bites freeze.
