How To Make Crispy Onion Rings

Ready-made onion rings contain all sorts of preservatives and additives with names that we cannot pronounce. Therefore, it is better to make them yourself at home, where you can be sure that they are made with quality ingredients.

Onion rings are the ideal accompaniment to hamburgers and hot dogs. They are also very easy to do. You can also serve them with any type of sauce, ketchup or barbecue sauce being particularly popular.

  • 1 medium onion
  • 1 cup of flour (120 g)
  • 1/4 tbsp baking powder (1 g)
  • Salt (to taste)
  • 1/4 tablespoon paprika powder or chili powder (1 g)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup of milk (200 ml)
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper (1 g)
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (120 g)
  • 1 cup of sunflower oil (250 ml)

  • First peel the onion and cut it into rings about 1 cm thick. Then carefully separate the rings and set the large and medium-sized ones aside. These are the ones you will be using for the recipe. You can use the smaller ones for another recipe.
  • Then mix the flour, baking powder, salt and chili powder together. Stir well and add each onion ring individually to the mixture. Then gently shake each ring to get rid of excess flour.
  • First add the milk, pepper and egg to the flour mixture and then beat until it is well mixed and free of lumps.
  • Then brush each onion ring with the mixture again. Dip in and shake off excess.
  • Then turn the rings in the breadcrumbs (after you have distributed the breadcrumbs on a plate).

Deep-frying and finishing touches

  • Once the onion rings are done, fry them in a pan with plenty of hot oil. The secret is to use sunflower oil, which is cheaper than olive oil and tastes milder. This way, the flavor of the onion really stands out.
  • Then deep-fry four at a time  (depending on the size of your pan). Gently turn them over, always making sure they don’t burn.
  • Then, when you see them turn gold, take them out of the oil and place them on paper towels so that the excess oil is soaked up.

Your delicious onion rings are ready! Finally, a barbecue sauce is added as the last special touch.

  • 1/2 onion
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 1/2 cup shredded tomatoes (125 ml)
  • 1 teaspoon of sugar (5 g)
  • 3 tablespoons of honey (50 g)
  • 3 tablespoons of vinegar (45 ml)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (2 g)
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper (2 g)
  • 2 tablespoons cola (30 ml)
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice (30 ml)
  • 3 tablespoons of olive oil (45 ml)

  • To start, fry the onion and the previously chopped garlic in oil. Then add the tomato, sugar and vinegar.
  • Gradually add the rest of the ingredients. The order doesn’t matter.
  • Then continue cooking to reduce the liquid so that the consistency becomes thicker.
  • Once you are happy with the texture, blend everything until it is free of lumps.
  • If you want a little more flavor, add a few drops of Tabasco sauce for that extra flavor. However, this step is only for those who like it spicy.
  • Finally, let the sauce cool for a few hours in the refrigerator. This allows the aromas to develop. So you have a perfect sauce for your onion rings.
